North Mara Gold Mine Limited is seeking to recruit Senior Environment Officer to join and grow their team. You will be expected to align to the Barrick DNA and to operate within our mining assets with our best people teams. You will contribute in a safe and cost-effective manner to achieve targets in accordance with Mine Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures and ensure daily targets are met.
About North Mara
The North Mara Gold Mine is in north-west Tanzania in the Tarime district of the Mara region. It is around 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria and 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border.
North Mara started commercial production in 2002. The mine is a combined open pit and underground operation from two deposits, Gokona (underground) and Nyabirama (open pit).
Responsibilities
- Updating and maintenance of the water, noise and air quality analytical and monitoring documentations to ensure they remain current and relevant to operations; communicate to workforce.
- Champion the implementation of site water balance across the site and ensuring the site comply with environmental legislation and company requirements.
- Coordinate and schedules proficiency test for Laboratory QAQC and team competency checks.
- Provide support and mentor subordinates in the use of monitoring equipment and the different working tools or programs.
- Coordinate Laboratory operational and management programs including equipment, materials, and reagents inventory.
- Ensure environmental Laboratory safety as per ISO 45001:2018
- Plan, coordinate and update environmental monitoring Programs.
- Implementation of the sampling programs and data collection for water quality, air quality, noise & vibration, meteorological
- Gather monthly HSEC/Sustainability data from all departments, compile the spreadsheet reports and complete QA/QC for the data.
- Collect data and information for hydrogeological and geochemical studies and monitoring activities.
- Coordinate daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly water sampling as scheduled.
- Proper use and up keeping of the site environmental laboratory.
- Update and transfer monitoring data in appropriate databases and undertake QAQC.
- Maintain the site wide chemical register, update the register of expired chemicals.
- Conduct hazardous material inspections as scheduled.
- Implement Biodiversity Action Plan
- Manage concurrent rehab activities.
- Engage in annual closure liability assessments.
- Engage in Closure related studies to inform future mine closure planning.
- Drive Mine Closure Plan document update.
- Assist on Mine Closure Plan approval follow-ups.
- Undertake tasks related to other environmental programs at the mine including waste, hazardous material management and vector control.
- Oversee and supervise the activities of vector control.
- Updating and maintenance of the EMS documentations to ensure they remain current and relevant to operations; communicate to workforce.
- Maintain the site environmental aspects register – regular review of operations and associated environmental aspects.
- Provide technical support to departments and contractors in the development of management programs and operational controls for their relevant aspects, and in the setting of site environmental objectives and targets for the year.
- Support departments to establish performance criteria and track performance.
- Maintain and update the legal and permit registers.
- Undertake annual assessment of compliance against the legal and other requirements for all departments and contractors.
- Follow up of environmental incidents and ensure all incidents are lodged.
- Maintain the action trackers and follow up on progress from responsible persons.
- Participate in ISO14001 Audits (internal and external), play a role of internal EMS auditor.
- Coordinate and/or conduct environmental training and awareness programs and maintain training records.
- Participate in implementation of the cyanide code.
- Plan, coordinate and supervise environmental projects.
- Participate in the EIA studies for new projects.
- Coordinate monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
Qualification requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, or Environmental Management, Environmental Chemistry or related field from a reputable University
- Professional registration with NEMC as Environmental Expert (EIA and Auditing) is an added Advantage
- Computer literacy is essential – Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc. The use of GIS and other specialized software’s for environmental management will be an added advantage.
Experience and Competencies needed
- Minimum of 6 years’ experience in environmental management in the extractive industry
- Understanding of the ISO 14001 certified environmental management system
- Experience and ability to work long hours in a remote site environment will be an added advantage
- Should be able to work under minimal supervisor and fast on leaning new technology
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
